This is critical. I always read Atem’s shift from “It’s alright if I don’t have my memories as long as I stay with my partner (and friends)” to “I must know/discover who I am” not as a sudden change of mind but as a sign of his growing awareness as a separate person, and not knowing who that person is, and how that must have been torturing him. Factor in the likely draw of destiny that he felt towards needing to find out, and it’s no wonder he changed his mind. Which may all be obvious, but I see it as important to note that it isn’t just that he was afraid before or that he cares less about staying. Reading Yuugi’s assessment of Atem’s want to win and stay with everyone during the final duel is all the proof I need for that.
